A*STAR

The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) is Singapore's lead public sector agency that spearheads economic oriented research to advance scientific discovery and develop innovative technology. Through open innovation, we collaborate with our partners in both the public and private sectors to benefit society.

We play a key role in nurturing and developing a diversity of talent and leaders in our Agency and Research Institutes, the wider research community and industry. A*STAR oversees 18 biomedical sciences and physical sciences and engineering research entities primarily located in Biopolis and Fusionopolis.

In addition to offering scholarships and awards for undergraduate, PhD and post-doctoral studies at top universities and laboratories locally and overseas, we offer awards and attachment opportunities for pre-university students.

Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise ecosystem has developed significantly over the past decade, and has grown to include a growing number of public and private R&D players. This has in turn resulted in a growing demand for PhD talent in various fields. In recognition of the diverse talents, strengths and interests of our PhD scholars, we have created multiple pathways for our scholars, providing them with opportunities to develop and chart their careers in industry, academia, spin-off companies, patent examination, technology transfer and research management after their first two years with A*STAR.

APPLICATION PERIOD

NATIONAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP (BS)

(i) Applicants with GCE 'A' Level/ International Baccalaureate (IB)/ NUS High School of Mathematics and Science Diploma/ Polytechnic Diploma

To apply for NSS (BS), click here. 

 APPLICATION DEADLINE: 1 Mar of current year

(ii) Applicants in undergraduate Year 2 & above (Mid-term NSS (BS))

To apply for Mid-term NSS (BS), click here  and select ‘Mid-term NSS (BS) Application’. 

 APPLICATION DEADLINE: 1 May of current year

 

NATIONAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP (PHD)

Successful candidates are required to complete a 1-year Research Attachment (RA) at an A*STAR research institute prior to their PhD studies. Applicants will need to factor in this RA requirement when planning for university admission. 

RA commencement year: By September of current year.  APPLICATION DEADLINE: 1 Mar of current year

RA commencement year: Next year. APPLICATION DEADLINE: 1 Oct of current year

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.

 

A*STAR COMPUTING AND INFORMATION SCIENCE (ACIS) SCHOLARSHIP

 The application cycle is aligned to the university admission intakes in Aug or Jan each year, as follows.

Admission Intake: Aug, APPLICATION DEADLINE: 1 Feb

Admission Intake: Jan, APPLICATION DEADLINE: 1 Aug of the preceding year

Applicants should concurrently apply for PhD admission to their intended university.

Please note that the choice of the PhD supervisor(s), project and university of successful candidates is subject to approval by A*STAR.

Applicants may submit GRE scores (if available) to be included in the overall assessment of their scholarship application.

 

A*STAR GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP (AGS)

The application cycle is aligned to the university admission intakes in Aug or Jan each year, as follows.

A*STAR INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP (AIF)

A*STAR accepts and processes applications throughout the year.

Applicants should speak with prospective supervisor and Executive Director prior to application. A*GA will seek comments from prospective supervisor and Executive Director.

 

A*STAR-University of Warwick (AWP) ENGD Partnership

Successful candidates are required to complete a 1-year Research Attachment (RA) at an A*STAR research institute prior to their PhD studies. Applicants will need to factor in this RA requirement when planning for university admission.
