Introduction
A very warm welcome to all of you at this 2008 Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship Award Ceremony.
2. As we commemorate our nation’s 43rd year of independence, we recognise that the peace, prosperity and success we celebrate today are the result of the contributions made by all Singaporeans. Our people have given much to ensure that Singapore continues to stay vibrant and competitive in the face of the many challenges that lie ahead. As a country, we have always put a strong emphasis on developing our human capital. We have in place a good education system and Singapore is quite unique in the way it invests in scholarships to groom outstanding young people to become leaders in society.
The Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship Fund
3. The Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship Fund was launched in 1991 with the objective of developing the potential of outstanding individuals from different disciplines to take on leadership positions in their respective areas of expertise and in their community. Since its inception, the Scholarship has been awarded to 24 individuals. There are no restrictions on the course of study. Scholars can pursue their post-graduate studies either locally or overseas. While there is no bond attached to the scholarship, Lee Kuan Yew scholars are expected to contribute their talent actively to the betterment of Singapore and their community.
Selection and Calibre
4. The selection of Lee Kuan Yew scholars is highly stringent. Above and beyond stellar academic achievements, candidates need to demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities, and be active in social or community service. Lee Kuan Yew scholars should also be persons of sound character and high moral standing. As such, in our selection of Lee Kuan Yew scholars, we look out for those who have distinguished themselves not only in their intellectual faculty, and leadership potential, but also in their commitment and sense of duty to serving Singapore and Singaporeans.
2008 Lee Kuan Yew Scholars
5. This year, the Public Service Commission received 82 applications for the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship. Today, it is my pleasure to present the scholarship to two worthy individuals who display these qualities of academic excellence, strength of character and dedication to social causes. The recipients of the 2008 Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship are Mr Vincent Leow and Colonel Perry Lim Cheng Yeow.
6. Mr Vincent Leow will be reading a Masters in Law at Harvard University. Colonel Perry Lim will be pursuing a Masters in Business Administration at INSEAD.
7. The award of the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship is recognition of their achievements and dedicated service to the community. As recipients of one of the most prestigious post-graduate scholarship, they join the fraternity of fine men and women who have made significant contributions to the society. I am confident that they will excel in their academic pursuits and set new heights for those who will come after them.
