Mr Tan was appointed as a Member of the Public Service Commission in 1990. His experience in the private sector has seen him as Director and Chief Executive Officer of Asia Pacific Breweries Group from 1990 to 1993, as well as Managing Director of the Fraser and Neave Group from 1993 to 2002, after which he retired, with effect from 30 September 2002 . He is currently Non-executive Director of Bluescope Steel Limited (of Australia), Leighton Asia Limited (HK), Singapore Post Limited, Keppel Land Limited and Great Eastern Holdings Limited. Mr Tan was awarded the Public Service Star in 1999.
